Veterinary Technician

An affiliate of Colossal is hiring a Veterinary Technician to partner with our animal husbandry team and veterinarians in caring for a wide variety of taxa under our responsibility. The Veterinary Technician serves as a vital member of the greater Animal Husbandry Team to provide the highest level of care and welfare for the animals under Colossal’ s oversight. This includes a diverse collection of species, both exotics and domestics with a focus on birds and small mammals but will also include other taxa as we grow our operations. This position reports to the Manager of Animal Husbandry and our Veterinarian.
**This position will be based out of the Dallas area with ~10% travel required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Aid with examinations, interpretation of data for accurate diagnoses of diseases and injuries, and the selection of appropriate medical treatment.
- Assist in surgical procedures, using anesthesia equipment and monitors, and preparing any surgical instruments required.
- Care of any hospitalized or quarantined animals which may include the administration of medications, and obtaining diagnostic samples or specimens as needed.
- Ensure all required equipment is available and functional prior to any procedure.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report individual animal responses to medical treatment to veterinarians.
- Document all hospitalized and quarantined animal observations including intake, output and demeanor in the animal record keeping system and other appropriate locations.
- Assist in necropsies and animal sample collections, including preparing samples for culture, storage, or shipment to outside laboratories.
- Perform laboratory tests, including fecal parasite exams; blood work; urinalysis; microbiological isolation, identification and sensitivity; and other tests as needed.
- Accurately fill, label and distribute animal prescriptions as needed.
- Monthly inventory of all pharmaceuticals and supplies. Biannual documentation of all controlled substances.
- Order all needed supplies, perform/schedule routine maintenance on veterinary equipment as required and perform housekeeping tasks to ensure appropriate cleanliness/sterility within the clinical environment.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Expertise in the veterinary care of a variety of wildlife species.
- Strong abilities in the areas of animal handling for veterinary care.

Education and Experience:
- Degree in veterinary technology, animal science, biology, or related field. Sufficient relevant experience will be considered in partial fulfillment of education requirement.
- 4+ years of experience as a veterinary technician, preferably in the treatment of a variety of wildlife species.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform strenuous work and lift at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend and stoop.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in a typical Dallas area climate and under field conditions (heat, humidity, plant allergens, insects, etc.).
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and evenings as needed.
